follow-up to my email: apparently I was incorrect in that students *can* opt out of the som-classof2012 list (thanks Calvin). however, i would hate to see someone opt out of the class list simply to avoid lots of social emails. suggestions received so far:
from Ashley: create a separate "som-classof2012-social" list dedicated to social events of all types, from which users can opt in or out

"som-classof2012-social" list is a great idea! keep the social events flowing!

Another suggestion for social communications: Send out an initial email over the listserv containing a link to a thread in the forum (much like this one!). This allows individuals to "opt in" to conversations about specific events, and nobody has to "opt out" of all social communications entirely.
Side note: a useful tool for impromptu polls (such as "which bar?") is Doodle (http://doodle.ch/main.html).

hahaha keep the social event emails coming i want to know that there are other people out there having fun instead of studying and if you don't like the social emails then don't read them

personally, i already have too much inclination to have fun instead of study we did create a separate "social" list: som-social(at)case.edu to subscribe, just send an email to lists(at)case.edu with the subject line "subscribe som-social" (without the quotes, of course) if the social emails on the main list get really out of hand, we can encourage people to use the som-social list.

I second this, I don't really see the point in having another 'social' list, which I'm sure everybody would sign up for anyway (nobody wants to be left out). Probably the only ppl who won't sign up for it are those who don't hear/know about it And we'd run into the same problem w/ a social listserv, with ppl responding to everyone on the listserv, so other ppl who don't want to go to a specific event will still get all the gory details

Just send out an email telling everyone that announcements are fine, but don't reply to all. Another email list isn't a bad solution, but it just seems unnecessary. I do agree that replying to 200 people with "How do I get to Coventry from my house?" is silly.
